Nursing Home Visitation
Honoring America's Grandparents

Shut-ins

Nursing Home Visitation Program:

PURPOSE: Celebrate National Grandparents Day by providing compassion and caring to America's forgotten, frail elderly--whether homebound or in convalescent-type settings. (Statistics state that as many as sixty percent of nursing home residents NEVER have a visitor.)

METHOD: Youth groups (such as Girl Scouts, Red Cross youth), junior high schools, churches and synagogues, Retired Senior Volunteers across the United States would each "adopt" a nearby convalescent facility. With the aid of nursing home staff or a local ombudsman, those elderly convalescent residents who have few or no nearby relatives could be listed with the adoptive youth group, church, etc. for special attention and visiting. (ElderCare programs, senior centers, nutrition centers and Meals-on-Wheels are additional resources for establishing lists of isolated elderly citizens.)

COMPLETION: The group (school, church, etc.) then develops a bulletin board covered with FORGET-ME-NOT TICKETS (see example below). Each Forget-Me-Not Ticket is to contain the name and nursing home (or other address) of one elderly person who would appreciate the kindness of a visit. Individual project members select a Forget-Me-Not Card, sign the master list beside the name of the person on their chosen Card, and then go visit that person--preferably once before Grandparents Day to get acquainted, and then again on Grandparents Day. Visitors spend time talking with this new, special friend and make this their loving way to celebrate National Grandparents Day.

NO GIFTS OR EXPENDITURES ARE DESIRED OR REQUIRED FROM "FORGET-ME-NOT"
VOLUNTEER VISITORS.

Your time and kind attention to the lonely, frail, sometimes bewildered, sometimes despairing oldster is the most precious gift you can bestow. Your goal: Be interested in these aging Americans--their life's accomplishments and griefs and joys. Show them they are appreciated and, most of all, that THEY HAVE NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN.

EVERY PERSON IS A GRANDCHILD.
BE A CARING GRANDCHILD BY HONORING THE ELDEST OF AMERICA'S ELDERS
ON NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS DAY.
